So, how many of us zoners are taking, have taken, or hope to take voice lessons? I'm taking them now, and I absolutely love them.

I took a couple voice classes in college, but never had individual voice lessons. I sing, but feel I'm a much better player than a singer. I liked the discipline that lessons gave my nmusic study in general.

I took voice lessons for a year in high schoolto improve my breathing and other skills. It was fun, but unfortunately, it did not really help me when it came to choir competitions. The breathing improved, but I got sick several times that year while doing them, and I think it was both singing in choir and during voice lessons that did my voice in. I went a section lower in choir my senior year, which was odd, but anyway. Voice lessons helps some people, but others, it does not. It just depends on the situation.

I wish more wannabe singers would take them!

LOL Jess!
Well, currently, seeing as I'm a bit tight on money, I'm currently teaching myself. Now, that's a pain in the butt1
You've gotta learn how the voice works, record yourself, and listen to your own voice which means you get to hear every little ugly sound that comes out.

You're right, Iris, but still worth it. If you listen close to true professionals, and pay attention to their breathing, articulation, pronunciation, and phrasing, you can learn a whole lot!

Wow. It's been a good bit of time since I last saw this little board I posted heeheehee. Just auditioned for the music school at Unc and it went really well.

I agree that you can learn a lot on your own, which is what I try to do. i record myself often, and I'm pretty harsh on myself when I go back to listen to it. I had a friend once who tried to "teach me", but of course, you can't "teach" something you aren't very good at yourself! Lol!
Anyway, i was in choir back in public school, but I do hope to take voice lessons one day. But seeing as money is tight these days, and because I have other priorities, that may not be for a while, but I do hope to try it out sometime while I am in college, especially since I am majoring in music education/performance, I know that voice lessons will be essential.

I'd love to take voice lessons while i'm here, but i'll have to see if they are offered first.

I took voice lessons during high school, and I loved it. Before sgetting into choir and taking lessons, people always said I was a good singer, but honestly I wasn't really, I was really only singing from my chest and using the lowest range I had. The teacher I had really pushed me and encouraged me to expand my range and now, while I'm most comfortable as an alto, I can hit some notes that would be considered soprano without much difficulty. Singing has always been one of my greatest passions.

I have taken voice lessons for many years now, just part of being a music voice major. They can get pricey depending on where you take lessons from. So teaching yourself is good. However, you have to be really careful that you are teaching yourself the right techniques. it is always good to listen to yourself and have other people listen to you as well. No matter if you are a beginner or a professional. So I would encourage anyone that is serious about singing to take voice lessons even if it is just a few of them. They can get you started with the right techniques. Once you have the basic techniques down, it makes learning the other techniques a lot easier. Plus if you dont' have the basic techniques mastered, you will not be abel to apply any other techniques correctly.

I used to take voice lessons, but I ended up stopping because I was tight on money. I loved them while I took them and I think they really helped. I still keep in touch with my old teacher, so that should give you an idea about how much they meant to me!

I sing now and do a lot of recording. I plan to take voice as my instrument in college. i'm an R&B singer, and voice lessons consist of classical technique but i know that if I apply the classical technique to what i do, it would definitely be improved.

I currently take voice lessons and love them. I've had multiple teachers who have taught me multiple techniques, e.g puff out your belly and push with all your might, but I've settled on Belle Canto (a technique used in opera and classical singing) at the moment. I wonder if I can apply it to other styles of music like Jazz. I love voice lessons and they're really fun. Hope to be a singer some day.

O&Afan567, What do you mean by classical technique? Is it belle canto?
